Preventing Water Damage

It’s true that water damage can be repaired… most of the time. But your losses could be more than just structural—family heirlooms or travel mementoes or your favourite painting, for example.

Leaks, which can seem so harmless, can cause serious damage.

Fortunately, just a little bit of prevention can make all the difference. To minimize risks, we suggest you keep the following tips in mind:

  • Stay in the bathroom when filling the bathtub
  • Check that the silicone around the bathtub and shower is in good condition
  • Once the wash is finished, close the washing machine faucets
  • Ensure that all the members of your family know where your home’s water shutoff valves are (inlet valves for water main, water heater, washing machine, dishwasher, sinks and toilets)
  • If your water heater is over 10 years old, check it regularly for signs of wear
  • In the fall, make sure your gutters and downspouts are not clogged
  • Always shut off the water supply to outdoor taps before winter
  • Carefully inspect your doors, windows and foundation each year to repair cracks and recaulk wherever needed

In the event of a loss, call a claims advisor to arrange for any required emergency assistance and start the claims process.
