Liability coverage

Coverages E, F, G and H

These coverages are included in standard insurance policies. They insure you for unintentional bodily injury or property damage that you cause to another person, anywhere in the world. For example:

  • a fire breaks out in your home and spreads to your neighbours’ homes
  • a visitor slips on icy stairs going into your home and breaks their leg
  • your son breaks a neighbour’s window during a snowball fight and your neighbour sends you the bill for the replacement window
  • your cleaner falls and gets hurt while cleaning your windows
  • your kid accidentally injures their friend during playtime and you need to pay the ambulance fees
  • the home you’re renting in Mexico is damaged by an accidental fire

If someone sues you, your financial situation could be put into jeopardy without this coverage. Most people choose $1 million of liability coverage, but you can increase the amount up to $5 million under certain conditions.

Fire, theft, vandalism

This covers you in case of fire, theft or vandalism.

Included

Fire, smoke and wildfires

Fire

All-risk insurance for fire damage

All-risk insurance covers most types of accidents, like damage caused by fire, smoke and forest fires.

For example, if a chimney fire causes your house to go up in flames, you would be covered. You would also be covered for your additional living expenses (like hotel expenses) if you have to temporarily relocate so that repairs can be done.

Included

Theft and vandalism

Theft and vandalism

All-risk insurance for theft and vandalism damage

All-risk insurance covers most types of accidents, like damage caused by theft and vandalism.

For example, if your house is burglarized and vandalized while you’re on vacation, you’d be covered for the cost of replacing or repairing the damage.

Water

Get extra coverage for water damage caused by sewer back-up, water seepage or floods.

Included

Accidental water leak or overflow

Accidental water leak or overflow

All-risk protection for damage caused if the water service pipe leaks or overflows (doesn't include events that happen repeatedly)

All-risk insurance covers most types of accidents, like damage caused when water accidentally leaks or overflows. However, it doesn’t cover damage that’s caused repeatedly by the same problem.

For example, if the hose to your washing machine suddenly breaks and causes damage to your home, you'll be covered.

If your water heater causes the same type of damage, the damage is also covered, as long as your water heater was not excluded from your insurance policy because it was too old.

Optional

Ground water and sewer back-up

Protect your home against damage caused by sewer back-up.

Water Damage ─ Ground Water and Sewer Back-Up (excluding flood caused by the overflow of a body of water)

Endorsement 16c

This insures you if water leaks, overflows or backs up from places like sewers and septic tanks and causes sudden and accidental damage to your property.

It can also cover you if ground water seeps in through basement windows, doors or floors, for instance because of a problem with the subsoil drainage pipe.

For example, if there’s heavy rainfall, water could accumulate and seep into your home through the foundations or a basement window. You would be covered for the cost of replacing, repairing and cleaning your damaged property.

See if you have enough groundwater damage coverage for all of your property.

The deductible for this coverage may be different from the deductible in your basic policy.

Optional

Flood

Get coverage for damage caused by floods.

Flood Caused by the Overflow of a Body of Water

Endorsement 16d

This covers sudden and accidental loss or damage caused by flooding from the overflow of bodies of water, such as:

  • Rising or overflow of any watercourse, whether natural or man-made
  • Dam breaks

Provided this water reaches the surface of the ground on the insured premises.

For example, if a river floods and the belongings in your basement are damaged by the water, you would be covered for the cost of repairing or replacing them (up to the amount indicated in your policy).

And if you have to leave your home because of the flooding, you would also be covered for your additional living expenses (like hotel expenses) during your temporary relocation.

The deductible for this coverage may be different from the deductible in your basic policy.

Optional

Rain, snow or sleet

With The Personal, get coverage for damage caused by above ground water.

Water Damage ─ Above Ground Water and Weight of Ice, Snow or Sleet

Endorsement 42

This covers sudden and accidental damage caused by:

  • rain or snow seeping through walls, roofs, doors and windows
  • water discharging, backing up or overflowing from eavestroughs or downspouts
  • the weight of ice, snow or wet snow.

Learn more by reading our water damage prevention tips.

Optional

Water service and sewer line breakage

La Personnelle couvre les réparations préventives du remplacement de votre entrée d’eau potable.

Water Service and Sewer Line Breakage

Endorsement 51

This insures you for the cost to repair or replace the pipe that brings drinking water into your home and the pipe that takes sewage out. These pipes are located outside of your home, on your premises.

For example, if your water service or sewer line breaks, you would be covered for the costs related to the following, up to the amount specified in your policy:

  • Tearing up your yard to access the broken line
  • Repairing or replacing the line
  • Restoring your yard following the repairs

These repairs could help prevent further damage to your property.

Not included

Repeated water seepage or leaks

Repeated water leaks or seepage

Exclusion ─ Damage caused by repeated water seepage or leaks

Your insurance only covers sudden and accidental water damage. In other words, if damage happens because you didn’t address an existing problem, it won’t be covered.

For example, the toilet on the 2nd storey of your home has been leaking for several months. One day you discover that the floor around the toilet has rotted, and that you need to replace the living room ceiling below the bathroom. These repairs would not be covered, because the damage occurred gradually due to a repeated, continuous water leak.

Storms and natural disasters

Find out how your group insurance protects you against severe weather events.

Included

Tornados, freezing rain, hail and wind

Tornado, freezing rain, hail, wind and lightning

All-risk protection for damage caused by tornados, freezing rain, hail, wind or lightning

All-risk insurance covers most types of accidents, like sudden loss or damage caused by tornado, freezing rain, hail, strong winds or lightning.

For example, if a windstorm causes a tree branch to smash through your window, you would be covered for the damage to your window as well as damage to any nearby property.

However, if a windstorm or hailstorm causes damage outside your home to trees, shrubs, plants or your lawn, that damage is not covered.

Optional

Earthquake

Earthquake

Endorsement 22a

This provides you with additional coverage if an earthquake causes damage to your property. It also covers damage by other ground movement that might be caused by an earthquake, like avalanches, landslides or subsidence.

Included

Fire, smoke or explosion after an earthquake

Endorsement 22b

This coverage is included in a standard insurance policy. It only provides coverage for:

For example, if an earthquake damages your home's electrical system and a fire breaks out, you would be covered for the cost of repairing or replacing the electrical system in your home.

Not included

Landslides, subsidence or other events

Landslides, subsidence or other events

Exclusion ─ Damage caused by a landslide, subsidence or other event

You are insured for damage caused by avalanches, landslides, subsidence or soil erosion only if these events are caused by an earthquake. If this type of damage occurs, you’ll need to check your additional insurance for Earthquake (Endorsement 22a) and Fire, Explosion and Smoke Damage Resulting From an Earthquake (Endorsement 22b) to see how much coverage you have.

Standard insurance policy never includes damage caused by tidal waves or tsunamis.

Not included

Defects, deterioration, and wear and tear

Standard insurance policies don’t cover business or professional activities in your home, like the activities of a home-based business, self-employed worker or hobby farm or the short-term rental of the residence.

For example, you aren’t insured for any damage to your home if you rent it out through short-term rental platforms.

We offer additional coverage options for some of these activities. Contact us for more information!
