Poll: Many Canadian drivers avoid backing up

According to a new poll, many Canadians report feeling a certain level of anxiety performing various driving tasks, and as a result, often avoid doing them.

The survey, conducted by Canadian Tire, found that 38 percent of Canada's motorists consciously avoid backing into a space at a parking lot because they're fearful they may run into someone or something. This was particularly common among women, as 51 percent said as much compared to 24 percent of men.

"Ninety percent of all driving decisions are made by what we see, but as our survey shows, once Canadian drivers shift into reverse they feel like they are driving blind," said Andrew Davies, Vice-President of the Automotive Division for Canadian Tire. "Driving effectively and safely in all directions is critical to keeping our roads and driveways safe."

Canadian Tire says motorists can purchase several safety enhancements to make driving tasks easier, such as a rearview mirror back-up camera, a back-up sensor system or a blind spot assist system.

These gadgets can potentially save a person's life, and if they come standard, they may also increase a vehicle's safety rating.
