IBC offers tips to homeowners as spring approaches

The snowy season may not be over quite yet, but spring is at the very least in the not-too-distant future. But the arrival of the spring season doesn't necessarily translate to homeowners being out of the woods with regards to home damage, as warming temperatures can lead to flooding hazards.

As IBC's vice president says, avoiding home damage is all about being proactive.

"It's important to take preventative action at this time of year because damage caused by overland flooding is not covered by home insurance policies anywhere," Adams said.

In the U.S., flood insurance has to be purchased as an addition to home insurance. But in Canada, flood insurance doesn't exist.

With this in mind, the Insurance Bureau of Canada has compiled a list of tips homeowners can follow to avoid damages.

Most of the home damage that comes in the spring is flood-related, so the IBC recommends moving valuables located in the basement to higher ground, as cellars are a prime area for flooding. Other precautions to take include installing a sump pump, keeping floor drains clear of obstructions and ensuring that gutters are clear of debris.
