Frequently asked insurance questions

Renovations underway

Do I have to tell you if I renovate my home?

You have to contact us if the work:

  • Increases the value of the home (for instance, if you add a storey or an extension or if you finish the basement)
  • Reduces or increases the risk of damage to your home, for instance, if you:
    • Replace a water heater that’s more than 10 years old
    • Replace a roof that’s more than 20 years old
    • Install a fireplace
    • Buy a swimming pool or a hot tub

You don’t have to tell us if you make minors cosmetic changes, such as painting a room or renovating a bathroom.

Confirmation of insurance

How can I get a temporary confirmation of insurance after making a change to my insurance policy online?

Have you made a change to your auto insurance policy using your Online Services account? When you finish the transaction, you’ll get a temporary confirmation of insurance that you can print. This is an official document that can temporarily replace your insurance policy for 7 days.

Do you need to provide proof of insurance to a dealership or creditor? Please contact us. We’ll send you a copy of your confirmation of insurance by email, regular mail or fax, whichever you prefer.

The temporary confirmation of insurance and the proof of insurance are not insurance contracts. They are provided for information purposes only, subject to all the terms, conditions, exclusions and provisions of your insurance policy.

Cancel an insurance policy

How can I cancel my home or auto insurance?

The easiest way to cancel your insurance policy is to contact us by phone.

We really want to hear what you have to say and understand what you need. Your satisfaction is our priority.

If you prefer to write, you can log in to your Online Services and send us a secure email. Simply select Renewal or cancellation and choose the insurance product to cancel. After that, just go to the How can we help you? section and provide us with your:

  • Desired cancellation date
  • Reason for cancellation
  • Address

Alternatively, you can complete and sign the form included with your home or auto insurance policy and mail it to the address on the form.

Please note that one of our agents may contact you to get you the advice you need.

We'll confirm the cancellation by mail.

Tip: Make sure you have appropriate insurance coverage from another company before the cancellation date. When you are comparing coverage options, think about what services and benefits are included, not just the price.

Do I have to pay any fees to cancel my insurance policy?

If you decide you don't want to renew your insurance policy, please contact us right away.

If the cancellation date is the same as the insurance renewal date, there will be no charge.

If the cancellation date is before the insurance renewal date, you may need to pay fees. This is standard industry practice. You'd be charged the premiums for the period your coverage was in effect up until the cancellation date, plus certain fees. To know how much you'd need to pay, please contact us.

Do I need to cancel my insurance if I store a vehicle or remove it from my policy?

No. This is just an update to your policy if you're:

  • removing one of your vehicles
  • replacing a vehicle with a different one
  • storing a vehicle

To update your policy, please go to Online Services or call an agent.

If you have only one vehicle on your policy, and you'd like to remove it because you've started using public transportation, for example, please contact us.

Can my insurer choose to cancel or terminate my policy?

Yes, in certain circumstances, your insurer could cancel or terminate your insurance policy, for example, if you hadn't paid your premiums or in the case of false representation or misrepresentation. At The Personal, we would notify you by registered mail well within legal time limits if we were going to cancel your insurance.
