Ontario auto insurance reform: What you need to know

Auto insurance is changing on July 1, 2026, to give you more choice. Under the new structure, fewer accident benefits are mandatory and more are optional. This means you can choose the coverage you really need.

Accident benefits: The new structure

Medical, rehabilitation and attendant care benefits are still mandatory. The following benefits are optional:

  • Income replacement
  • Non-earner
  • Caregiver benefits
  • Lost educational expenses
  • Expenses of visitors
  • Housekeeping and home maintenance
  • Damage to personal items
  • Death benefits
  • Funeral benefits
  • Dependent care
  • Indexation
  • Supplementary medical, rehabilitation and attendant care benefits

Who is covered by optional accident benefits?

As of July 1, 2026, optional benefits only apply to:

  • Named insured
  • Spouse of the named insured
  • Dependents of the named insured and of the named insured’s spouse
  • Persons specified in the policy as drivers of the insured automobile

This means that some people (such as pedestrians, cyclists and certain passengers) who may been have covered in the past may no longer be eligible for accident benefits.
