What is Civil Liability coverage?
(Section A)

In the event of an at-fault car accident, you’re covered:

  • If you accidentally damage someone else’s property (e.g., fence, house)
  • If you accidentally cause an injury or fatality elsewhere in Canada or in the United States

In Quebec, bodily injuries that result from car accidents are covered by the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ).

Insurer’s tip

Under the Quebec Automobile Insurance Act, you must have at least $50,000 in civil liability coverage for a private passenger vehicle, but most people choose $1 million or more. Also, it’s worth knowing that if you have an accident in the United States, the damages will be calculated based on the current exchange rate.

What is Collision and Upset coverage?
(Section B2)

Required if your vehicle is leased or purchased with financing

This coverage protects your vehicle against damage caused by collision or upset. For example:

  • If you collide with another vehicle
  • If your vehicle hits an object
  • If your vehicle rolls over

Insurer’s tip

Without this protection, repairs to your vehicle will not be covered if you have an at-fault accident. Collision and Upset coverage is essential if you have a new vehicle.

What is All Perils Other Than Collision or Upset coverage?
(Section B3)

Required if your vehicle is leased or purchased with financing

This coverage protects you against loss or damage caused to your vehicle, such as:

  • Theft
  • Cracked or broken windows
  • Vandalism
  • Fire
  • Weather events (e.g., wind, lightning, earthquake, flood, hail)
  • Flying or falling objects
  • Loss or damage caused by projectiles
  • Riots or disturbances of the peace
  • Explosions

Insurer’s tip

Without this coverage, you’d have to pay for expenses like windshield repairs or the cost of replacing your vehicle if it is stolen or destroyed in a fire.
